DEKRA: trusty DTM partner par excellence

DEKRA and the DTM have enjoyed a long partnership. Europe's largest technical support organisation and the most popular international touring car series have been working closely together since 1989. The cooperation has always put a particular emphasis on the safety of racing cars, in order to offer drivers, mechanics, marshals and spectators the best possible protection whilst at the same time allowing exciting motorsport of the highest calibre.

Under the direction of the Volker Noeske, Head of the DEKRA Automobile Test Center, and Wolfgang Dammert, DEKRA Motorsport Coordinator, DEKRA ensures the safety of the cars on race weekends as Official Technical Partner of the DTM. DEKRA is commissioned by the German Motor Sport Association (DMSB) to undertake the complete operational implementation of the acceptance test. Noeske and Dammert's five-man team is joined by an engine specialist, who is responsible for sealing and inspecting all the DTM engines. Since 2010, DEKRA commissioners have used a 3D precision index arm, which simplifies and optimises test processes.

However, the DEKRA experts do not just monitor the compliance with technical regulations, but are actively involved in shaping the safety-related regulations. This applies, in particular, to the completely revised and forward-looking regulations that have been in force since 2012, and which have heralded a new era with even more spectacular DTM cars. As well as ensuring all participants have equal opportunities, the new DTM regulations focus on guaranteeing maximum safety for the drivers. "The issue of safety is of utmost priority for DEKRA--including in motor sport. The solutions discovered in this field have repeatedly found their way into automotive engineering, thus helping to make individual mobility safer," says Clemens Klinke, Member of the Board of Management DEKRA SE and responsible for the automotive business unit.

The main pillar of the new DTM safety concept, which was tested exclusively at the DEKRA Crash Test Center (CTC) in Neumünster and the DEKRA Automobile Test Center (DATC) in Klettwitz, is an innovative carbon-fibre safety cell with a fitted role cage made of high-tensile steel. This cell incorporates the driver's seat, pedals, steering column and safety tank, guaranteeing optimal protection should the car be involved in a crash.

However, there is even more to the cooperation between DEKRA and the DTM. As well as its role as Official Technical Partner, DEKRA has also been a permanent fixture in the DTM since 1989 as a sponsor of the series. As such, the DEKRA logo is emblazoned above the start numbers on all the racing cars. The message could not be clearer: DEKRA and the DTM simply belong together.
